High Court Strikes Down ACT Same-Sex Marriage Laws

In a unanimous judgment, the High Court has ruled that the Commonwealth of Australia has the sole power over marriage, and that they have exercised that power to the exclusion of other legislative bodies.

During the 5 day period where same-sex marriages took place in the ACT, some 15 couples were married under the laws. Those persons are now no longer married, and have had their unions annulled by the ruling.
