Victoria has introduced new legislation in an aim to streamline trials and to make them easier for jurors to understand. It is believed the new laws will also reduce the amount of appeals and retrials.
The new legislation means that only the information relevant to the areas of dispute in a trial must be summarised by the Judge to the jury, rather than having to summarise all the evidence.
The legislation also seeks simplify the required directions to the jury in regard to post-offence actions down to 2 pages. Previously those directions were explained over 15 pages.
