The Commonwealth government has announced its plans to challenge the ACT over its new same-sex marriage laws. Federal Attorney-General George Brandis has received advice that the bill is invalid by reason of inconsistency with Commonwealth law.
ACT Attorney-General Simon Corbell believes however that the law is able to exist concurrently with the Commonwealth law.
Same-sex couples in the ACT are expected to be able to take advantage of the new laws before Christmas, after they have given their four weeks notice.
