A recent article in The Age highlights alarming figures that show more assaults occur on Australia Day than any other public holiday. Australia Day assaults also nearly double the average assaults per day for non-public holidays. In 2012 there were 109 assaults reported to police on Australia Day. On average 69 assaults are reported daily.
Police are reminding everyone of the potentially devastating effect that one punch can have, and to not allow situations to end in violence.
Police believe that the drastic increase is most likely a caused by a mix of warmer weather, alcohol, drugs and large groups of people celebrating.
